LouFest Artist Spotlight: Jonny P.

Thirty seconds into Jonny P.'s single, "Good to You", and you'll want to hear more from him. Seriously. We'll wait:

Yeah, we thought so. Those silky smooth vocals and simple yet comforting instrumentals would be right at home during the 1950s and 60s, which is exactly what he's going for: a callback to the classic sounds of soul music.

Growing up in the Bronx, he was exposed to hip-hop, reggae, and Latin music early on in his life, but nothing had a more profound effect on him than the music they played at church—and everyone knows that soul music was born out of church.

In his own words, "Suppose all music is apple pie. Every genre is apple pie, but soul music is the only one that’s served hot with ice cream on the side.”

He's trying to move soul music forward and show it still has a place in the 21st century. “It’s so important to me to add to the story of soul music. I don’t want to create a record that has to go up against Sam Cooke or Otis Redding or anybody like that. If I tried to create some thing that sounds identical to them, I personally would never spin that record. It’s just a moment in time that can’t be re-created. Hopefully I can help carry it forward because more than anything else, soul music is about right now.”

Jonny P. takes the stage at LouFest on Saturday, September 9th at 2:00 PM.
