LouFest Artist Spotlight: Rainbow Kitten Surprise

Boone, North Carolina is known for two things, mainly: being named after Daniel Boone (because he camped there a couple times...) and being a breeding ground for talented musicians. Widespread Panic, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Eric Church all hail from this small town in northwestern N.C. There must be something in the water/moonshine.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise—don’t let the name fool you, they’re not a Japanese pop band—is yet another talented group of musicians bursting out of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Started in 2013 as an acoustic duo, the band has grown into a five-piece monster that knows no boundaries and accepts no genre.

Pull them up on Spotify, put it on shuffle, and you’ll see what we mean. Their songs swing from quiet acoustic songs with Fleet Foxes-esque harmonies to the off-kilter vibes of Modest Mouse. The most common comparison, however, is to Kings of Leon, albeit with less distortion. So maybe think of them like Kings of Leon Lite.

Most importantly, these guys know how to put on a show. If you watch their short concert below, you’ll see the sound just as good live as they do in studio. Expect a taste of their upcoming album at this year’s LouFest. We can’t wait to be Rainbow Kitten Surprised.
